To paraphrase a quote attributed to Groucho Marx, "I've had a wonderful evening, but this wasn't it."Ok... you see where I'm going with this.
I'm a real sucker for a great submarine thriller. This certainly isn't one of them. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is far too much time spent *off* the sub in the jungle of Nicaragua etc. than *in* the sub. I'm stubborn, so I hung in there - determined to finish it and at least experience the baddie sub captain get his just deserts.
The ending - and this is not a spoiler because you KNOW the baddie gets sunk by the goodie, right? In this genre, such endings are canon - is so lame I couldn't believe it. A cardinal sin, in my opinion, whether in prose or film, is building up the villain to be, well, really villainous and nasty, and then not dispatching him with a truly spectacular denouement in both detail and degree of violence. You know, Karma baby!
Not here. It was a true WTF?!
If you're into submarine tech/thrillers, this will be nothing but greatly disappointing.

Full Fathom Five A Captain Peter MacKenzie Novel Book 1 edition by Bart Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Interesting idea, and the action scenes are good. I can understand why the movie made from this book was reviewed so badly on . Some of the "coincidental" situations are hard to accept, and the dialog seems forced in most places. I had been upset to find this wasn't available in my local library (or any other library in the State!), but now I see why. Barely worth the 99 cents I paid for acccess.
One of the more action packed and engaging submarine novels ever penned. The interpersonal exchanges aboard are realistic and compelling. The story line is tight and cleverly designed.
All in all a great piece of suspense filled writing! Thank you...
Full Fathom Five is a good book well worth reading for it's entertainment value. However I personally feel that the author should stay away from writing romantic novels and stick to what he's best at which is action/adventure military novels. I would definitely read other books by Bart Davis as I feel he knows his submarines and can keep me turning pages.
It takes several chapters to get into the
Story . I. Almost gave up but as I read more it began to get better.
I will give it four stars because the last half is is a real page turner.
It was both entertaining and plot integrated nicely into its historic novel genre once given the artistic license of a Soviet client actually being able to hijack a Soviet sub. But the authors knowledge of submarines and their capabilities was unquestionable and spot on. It showed he has some actual background there. The characters were well fleshed out with enough personal history to make them believable and understand their motivations. Overall this book has all the usual aspects of an good action novel, love interests, good action scenes with some good twists and a decent climactic ending
This is, what else, a submarine story. It is centered in the Gulf of Mexico and the US Navy is up against the Russians, a few Cubans, and the Nicaraguans(?),of all people. Throw in some rebel uprisings, the inevitable rescue at sea, and a couple of loose cannons, and you have a pretty good story. I never realized it was so easy to disable and capture a nuclear submarine, but fiction is like that.
This was an enjoyable read, especially the under sea conflicts. The engagements were well written, believable and realistic. My only wish was that there were more of them. I felt that the jungle warfare sections were a little too lengthy for a submarine book. Suspense was kept at a good level throughout. I only found one error in the plot, when it seemed that the amount of oxygen needed for the trip in the mini-sub was grossly underestimated.
To paraphrase a quote attributed to Groucho Marx, "I've had a wonderful evening, but this wasn't it."
