This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
The cultivation of the native grape and manufacture of American wines George Husmann Books
I ordered this book because of an interest in native (as in wild) grapes and because one of my confreres had questions about taming a concord grape growing on a fence. While some of the agricultural information may still be of interest to the organic farmer, the discussion of varieties is largely of historic interest. The book, in fact, did not contain much real information about native grape species, but it did give plenty of information about hybrids of native grapes in cultivation during the middle of the last century. It made for interesting reading.Product details

The cultivation of the native grape and manufacture of American wines George Husmann Books Reviews
Not what I expected.
This book is of interest for historical reasons. It isn't some page turner. BUT if you are interested in wine grapes and growing wine in the USA (often no vinifera grapes) this will be of interest.
Great info for a book written more than 130 years ago. My only complaint is the illustrations noted in the text are not provided. That would make it 5 stars.
Haven't read yet, but looks good and was free. )
The early development of vineyards in areas familiar to me...including vineyards of grandparents in Missouri. Interesting mindset of developing an industry and the stats and efficiencies needed to make it viable. Grape varieties...some long forgotten and some still available...interesting read for those of us who make wine.
Interesting book from the 1800s. Mostly about grape growing and wine making in Missouri, and a lot of "what I do here might not work in other places" disclaimers. Good airport read on my .
I'm an armature wine maker...but "professional" wine lover. This short, easy to read capture of grape growing and wine making during The Civil War is a fascinating read for a wine enthusiast of any level! This writing was not intended to be "humorous" but I had a lot of laughs reading it considering that when written it was staged from the "western United States...Free Missouri"! I would say that it was money well spent...but you can download it free thanks to our friends here at ! Get your copy, enjoy the history and learn some old techniques. Also see how far viticulture has progressed since then, but also some tips that you can use today as well!
